At ACODO I essentially teach English but actually it is more than that…. We spend time together, get to know each other, have fun, sing, play and all learn together.
Kids are kids and like any kids in the world, they want to learn and to play. My role is to introduce the Roman alphabet to young kids and teach them how to read and write in English. It is hard work but also very rewarding…you should see David and Chanti’s smile after they are done with their homework and they had them all good!!!! I will remember these smiles forever.
The kids at ACODO like singing and singing in English is a lot of fun to them. You can ask Yorm – she would be learning English just by singing…. The teenagers are great to teach too as you can really feel they strongly desire to learn and develop. Some of them are very good at English… We can have very interesting conversations and also a lot of fun. Some of them are very committed and their progress is tremendous. Chantha and Set are a couple of examples…their performances have really been impressive.
As a volunteer, you can really help these kids. The longer you stick around, the more beneficial it is for them…Of course the hardest part in the story comes when you part away because of the attachment. You will be surprised by how strong the link can become. The kids will appreciate your love and attention. They will be thankful for your time.
I would really recommend a long term volunteering at ACODO to anyone who likes kids. It is truly an amazing experience.
